Class 8: Negotiations, Me-Gotiations and Practice

Readings
—Chapter 12 (Negotiation).
—Chapter 6 (Solitude)
—Ury, "Don't React: Go To the Balcony" (Can be found inside the Handbook and Fieldguide)

**Note that there are no writing assignments for either of the two readings. In class be please prepared to offer input on, and respond to questions relating to:

1. How would you rate the percentage of Solitude in your typical day?
2. What could you do to increate the level of Solitude?
3. Why might you avoid periods of solitude from time to time?

1. What are the Core Concerns and what is the Core Concerns approach to negotiation?
2. Which Core Concerns matter most to you?
3. How might practicing mindfulness allow you to more skillfully deliver on the Core Concerns approach in a negotiation?

Writing Assignment
—Research sources for your paper and assemble a list of at least 10 of them to turn in on Friday. (note that about 1/2 of your paper references may come from our class readings with at least 1/2 coming from outside resources you locate on your own).

Creative Assignment
Lead yourself.

—Continue to practice DNI.

Spirals
—Keep an eye out for Spirals in your interactions/negotiations with others. Pay attention to whether the insights of the Core Concerns help explain the Spiral. Come to class prepared to discuss a Spiral that takes place this week.. If you would like a Spiral form to track it,

Mindfulness Practice:
Practice at least five days, as you choose. Limit your observations to 3 words.

Mindful Space:
Remember to make note of your Mindful Space practice on the Practice Journal so Madeline can keep track.

Cell Phone Practice:
Endeavor to not use your phone when driving or eating, whether with others or by yourself. Note how this intention connects to Solitude.
